Solar Systems Under 100kW

Small-scale Renewable Energy Certificates.

Small Scale Technology Certificates or STC’s are generated under the federal government Small Scale Renewable Energy Scheme. Solar PV systems under 100kW may qualify for STC’s.

What are STCs?

Small-scale technology certificates are created for eligible small-scale renewable energy systems, including solar PV systems under 100kW. The number of certificates created is based on the system’s geographical location, installation date, and the amount of electricity generated. One certificate is equal to a one-megawatt hour of eligible renewable electricity generated.

Certificates act as a form of currency and can be sold to recoup a portion of the cost of purchasing and installing the system. Cherry Energy Solutions manage this process and include the STC component in all solar PV system proposals. To find out more, click here.

Difference between LGCs and STCs

LGC’s or large-scale generation certificates are created per megawatt-hour (MWh) of eligible electricity generated by a “power station”. A solar PV system bigger than 100kW is classed as a “large scale”. STC’s or small scale technology certificates are generated when a solar PV system is smaller than 100kW.

Eligibility for STCs

STC’s are created under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Small-scale solar (under 100kW), wind and hydro systems may be eligible for STC’s. The number of certificates created is based on the system’s geographical location, installation date and the amount of electricity generated over one or five years or a single maximum deeming period.

How does it work?

One certificate is equal to one megawatt hour of eligible renewable electricity either generated or displaced by the system
