COMMERCIAL SOLAR PANELS

UNDERSTANDING
SOLAR PANELS.

Solar panels are made up of photovoltaic (PV) cells. These cells use light energy from the sun to generate electricity. The cells are made up of mono or polycrystalline silicon or thin-film and are connected to each other electrically to a specific voltage and in parallel to get an amperage.

HOW DO SOLAR PANELS WORK?

Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels (or modules) work by absorbing sunlight and turning it into energy. The energy is sent to the inverter where it is converted from DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current) and fed into a building for use. The wattage of the panel is the calculation of the voltage and the amperage. Solar panels come in a range of different wattages from 275W, with brands now developing panels of up to 400W and each panel manufacturer claims different efficiencies.

PANEL EFFICIENCY

PERFORMANCE

Manufacturers offer a range of panels with different efficiencies ranging from an average 16% – 24%. The efficiency of a panel (module) is determined by the area of a panel given the same rated output. A 16% efficient panel will have a smaller area than a 22.6% efficient panel. Ultraviolet, infrared and monochromatic light, how the cells split the light, whether they are top layer or back layer load carrying and other technologies (are they mono or polycrystalline cells?) can also affect the efficiency.
